Donovan To Retire - He Can Now Return To Everton As A Fan
Bookmark and Share

Former Everton player, Landon Donovan has decided to retire at the end of the MLS 2014 Season.

Donovan had 2 spells at Everton on loan in 2010 and 2012. He became an instant hit with the Everton fans.

Landon said: "After careful deliberation and many conversations with those closest to me, I have decided that this will be my last year as a professional soccer player.

"It has been more than anything I could have dreamed of to represent the LA Galaxy, the San Jose Earthquakes, Everton, U.S. Soccer and Major League Soccer throughout my career.

"There are so many people I want to thank who have inspired me, guided me and helped me on this incredible journey. I simply could not have accomplished what I did during my playing career without an overwhelming amount of support from my family, my friends and many others.

"I plan to express my gratitude to everyone in a more detailed manner at a later date; however, for now, I want to single out the fans. You are the lifeblood of this sport and, without you, none of us would be fortunate to call ourselves professional soccer players in MLS."

Back on Sunday 14 march 2010, Landon was talking about the Everton fans:  "I'm 28 years old now and I've played over 100 times for my country, I've also played a lot of league games in different parts of the world. But I've never met a fan base like this, either playing for them or as an away player. Forget about football for a moment, this is a life experience I'll never forget."

Back in 2012 Landon said: "I miss the people. I miss the people a lot. I miss driving to Goodison Park. I miss just the positive energy of the fans walking into the stadium and how much they care about that club and the team. And I miss the players a lot. The players are really what made it easiest for me when I first went.

"I'll be forever indebted because with a lot of teams' guys there would be jealousy, they wouldn't be welcoming, and they would do everything they can to not allow you to get on the field in that couple of months. And, it was the opposite when I first got there (Everton) and I will always remember that.

"I would absolutely like to come back. There's no question about that. And I know I will be back at some point. Now, whether I'm back as a player or just as a fan, who knows?"

Spot on Les, Phuket. Always like the guy - always tried his best whilst on loan, wished he too had stayed longer.

Not sure people praising his attitude and approach to fitness is 'feting him as some sort of legend.' He did a solid job for us; in his second spell he contributed 5 assists in just over two months he was with us, which is more than more celebrated players with higher profiles and bigger pricetags do over entire seasons. Given our budgets we had at the time of his two spells, we couldn't have done a lot better

Liked him a lot and so did the fans. Wish we'd had him earlier and longer though. He had a great attitude.

Actually Les #1, you're spot on about how the US are general ahead of us in terms of fitness and nutrition regimes... maybe there's a role LD could assist the club in if he has any thoughts of helping the Blues other than playing ?
Andy, Llay, nr Wrexham..., 1:07 PM 8/08/2014
This guy had a first class attitude, not daunted in the least and played with a swagger that was beyond his two phases at Everton. He has the power to influence State side and I'm convinced the bargaining tool of playing at a great club such as ours will steer one or two class imports across the pond.

US Soccer players pride themselves in dedication to fitness, with respect, there probably ahead of some of our boys with nutrition and fitness regimes. With this in mind Landon would still be competitive at 32 in the Prem for a few season, would love to have him back as cover. Visiting as a fan we will give him a great reception, and thanks for the memories although shorter than we would have liked due to circumstances beyong his control. Enjoy your retirement Landon
