Billy Bingham
Billy Bingham

On this day back in 1977, Billy Bingham was sacked as Manager of Everton FC.

Billy had taken over the club in 1973, and under his tenure Big Bob Latchford was signed as was Martin Dobson.

Billy left with the club having reached the League Cup Semi Final with the Blues but it was his successor Gordon Lee at the helm as we beat Bolton Wanderers over two legs to reach Wembley for the first time in nine long years.

Bingham nearly won the Title with the Blues in 1975, but after leading the League at Easter a run of only one win in their last five matches handed the title to Derby County, and the Blues tailed off into fourth spot.

Comments about On This Day: Bingham Sacked
I think Bingham was our worst manager. To see players like Dave Clements and Mike Bernard play in an Everton midfield was sickening. Martin Dobson who was a great player was wasted by Binghams tactics. Bingham had money to spend remember. Latchford was a great buy and record signing at the time.
