More On This Day

On this day in 1909 Everton started on the most adventurous end of season tour ever undertaken by a league club to tour South America. Spurs played the Toffees in a 2-2 draw in Argentina. Everton's goals came from Bert Freeman and W. Balmer.

W Balmer (the W stood for William, not as mistakenly reported on several web pages Walter) left Everton in 1908 and so was highly unlikely to have scored against Spurs in Argentina in 1909. It was probably his brother Robert Balmer who continued to play for the club after William had left.
