Jagielka Showed He Is Still First Choice For England

Phil Jagielka was on the bench for the England 4-0 win over Lithuania, but returned against Italy and showed he is still the best centre back for England.

Martin Keown: "When you look at Phil Jagielka's rise in international football, it has been completely without fanfare.

"He had a couple of hairy moments, but still looked the best defender on show in Turin, weighing in with countless clearances and blocks. He also reads the game very well.

"He was relegated to the Championship with Sheffield United in 2007 and bought by Everton, where he took a while to mature.

"But right now, he looks better than Smalling and Jones, who have had a lot more hype surrounding their breakthroughs into the England squad. Jagielka was left out against Lithuania, but showed he should still be first-choice."

There was a media campaign ahead of the world cup that he was going to get found out there, then a media campaign to blame him for our defensive frailties there. Truth is the back 4 were sold down the river at the world cup by the lack of cover in front of them, and were frequently left 2 on 1 by the front 6 not tracking back. It's been noticeable this season that most of the press and TV muppets have continued to take any opportunity to highlight odd errors that he has made, to blame him wherever possible for collective shortcomings, and to say as little as possible about the good stuff. It was refreshing to hear the commentary team in Italy finally giving him credit for a top performance, even if the press were watching a different game. Thankfully Hodgson seems to appreciate him, as do 99% of blues. He has been, and still is, a superb player for us. Also the ideal partner for Stones to play alongside and to learn from.

He should be the best at Everton and for England but has not been convincing this season...should not need the last ditch interceptions etc if he reads the game like he used to...god knows who we need to pair with him....Lescott was only half the player without Jags....need someone composed and who reads the game with an old head like Buzz 3 years ago to pair with him...Stones is still at least a season away?!?!?

I can't believe the match reporter from one of the papers today gave Jags a 5. To me he was MOM. The gobshite.

Best game in an England shirt last night. Timing and reading the play impeccable. Could of been a trying post match interview for Roy,if not for Jags standing tall.
