Time Running Out For McCarthy
Bookmark and Share

James McCarthy looks to be out of the Ireland team to play Scotland on Friday.

The Everton midfielder injured his hamstring in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Sunderland.

Allthough Macca is improving the game may come too soon for him to play in.

McCarthy did nothing bar walk around the pitch with a member of the team's medical staff during the open part of yesterday's session and he was due to have another scan after lunch.

It may mean a place for teammate Darron Gibson. Seamus Coleman and Aiden McGeady are also expected to start.

Irish manager, Martin O'Neil said: "He's improving each day.

"It's more to see whether it's actually improved more than anything else. He's much better. If the game was in another week's time, he wouldn't have a problem. It's early yet to make a decision. We've got tomorrow to think about it."

"I think he'd have to do a little bit of something because it's a muscle injury - more than just a knock."

Would you take a risk and play McCarthy? Comment Below.

John (Bristol): Don't think you are very well informed about the international scene. This is not a friendly, it IS a qualifier - for EURO 2016

Guys It's not a FRIENDLY. ...very important Qualifier as both teams are doing well in the group and Germany are struggling. .So a win for either side is crucial.. McCarthy is the lynchpin in Irelands midfield but he won't be fit enough. .so stop fretting. .

Can I just say once again, what the hell is the point of most of these 'friendlies'. Playing Scotland is only going to be of use to the Republic if they are priming themselves to play one of the home countries in a qualifier. All they do is risk injury to valuable Everton players. The only up side is, of course, the injury problems incurred by sides other than EFC.

It looks like McCarthy is out, but hopefully will be back for West Ham. Personally I hate internationals and couldn't usually give 2 f**ks, about Irelands games. The FAI is ran by an arsehole who pays himself close to half a million euro in salary, which is more than most other national secretaries. The League of Ireland is piss poor, and conditions are atrocious. The fans are generally band wagon jumpers who will switch allegiances to whatever sport is in vogue, Rugby, Gaelic, Boyzone or Horse racing. Its not a coincidence that the most popular clubs have been the most successful

If the lad is unfit for this one,I hope my Irish friends will forgive this,he should not be considered for the Scotland friendly.I can see him risking it for a qualifier, but not when there is nothing to gain for the Republic and a whole lot to lose. Remember Gibbo was guilty of rushing himself back into the fray when he had a season long injury playing for his country. That has put him back a load more than just appearances missed and lack of match play.He is viewed as a sick note type now too and is not first choice for that midfield berth.McCarthy will only get better and more important for the Irish as he matures and learns his craft,so a bit of patience may pay huge dividends later on.
