While Everton skipper Phil Jagielka was all smiles as he put pen to paper to keep him here until 2018. A stay of 11 years at Everton when the new contract runs out.

A certain George Green was on his way out the door to sign for Oldham athletic on a free. Green was the new 'best player of his age' when Everton signed him for £300,000 from Bradford City in October 2011.

The 19-year-old was released by the Blues this summer after his contract expired and former Blues boss Joe Royle, who also managed Oldham and is now professional development co-ordinator at Everton, recommended him to Oldham.

Green said: "Joe Royle at Everton pushed me towards Oldham because of his relationship with the club and I managed to get the move and I'm delighted to be here."

Meanwhile things just get better for Jags. Having been voted the Players' Player of the Season and given the Goal of the Season prize after his thunderbolt against the redshite.

Jags said: "It's always nice to feel wanted. Being rewarded with the extra year gives me that motivation to keep striving to get better and to keep going for as long as possible.

"It wasn't the longest negotiations ever. It only took a couple of minutes rather than hours. I love it here, I want to stay here and thankfully enough the Club felt the same.

"The contract was drawn up and I popped back after a little holiday to sign it. Now I look forward to getting back for pre-season."

Roberto said: "It's great news that Phil is extending his relationship with the Club. He has excelled as a leader and as a captain of our football club for the last two seasons.

"I am sure everyone connected with the Club will join me in being absolutely delighted that he has signed this extension to his deal.

"Players with leadership qualities like Phil are rare and, undoubtedly, it's something you need to be born with. But what's even more impressive for me is how Phil continues to grow and develop in the role.

"Phil carries out the role of Club captain with incredible enthusiasm and integrity. He's a fantastic example to everyone around him.

"While we are working really hard to add new talent to our squad for next season, we are equally focused on maintaining the core of our squad and the outstanding talent we have in our dressing room.

"I'm sure this news will give everyone a real boost as we start to prepare for the season ahead."
