Great Britain will play Canada in the quarter-finals of the women's Olympic football tournament after beating Brazil 1-0 at Wembley last night and once again, Everton Ladies played their part.

Steph Houghton struck the winning goal in just the second minute to score her third goal in as many games and Kelly Smith had a penalty saved after the break but GB went on to get their third straight win and top their Group in front of 70,584.

It was not quite enough to break the Olympic record of 76,489 set at the 1996 Games, but it surpassed the 53,000 who watched Dick Kerr's Ladies FC take on St Helen's Ladies at Goodison Park in 1920 (another Everton First).

Jill Scott was outstanding in midfield and Fara Williams came on as a late substitute to see the Ladies through to the Quarter-Finals. Rachel Brown was an unused sub.

GB Boss Hope Powell said: 'Great Britain have secured a magnificent win.'

'There are quite a few girls making golden reputations for themselves and no one more so than Steph Houghton. It has been a fabulous evening at Wembley, the spirit of the Olympics seems to have been fed into every fibre of these girls' being. GB will really fancy themselves now to beat Canada and go through to the semis.'

Well done Ladies.

A good game and a great win. Who said Ladies footy wasn't worth watching?!

An absolutely enthralling and competitive match, far more exciting to watch than the men's matches! That is not just female bias as the men of the household made those comments! Come on girls, keep it up and continue with that fighting spirit.

This was as good a game as you could hope to see at any time..... the serial divers of the PL should be made to sit and watch these girls play. no rolling in agony clutching your face because a daisy looked at you, no waving imaginary cards, no snapping and snarling at the ref... just getting up and getting on with the game. well played girls
