Everton Ladies have won the FA Women's Cup Final at The City Ground. They beat Arsenal 3-2 after extra time with 2 goals from Natasha Dowie and an own goal to take the trophy. Mo Marley's team were ahead after 16 minutes when Fara Williams had a shot saved, but Natasha Dowie pounced on the rebound to score. 1-0 Everton.
Arsenal equalised with a penalty. Everton went in 2-1 up at half time after an own goal from Arsenal Captain Faye White, who headed a Toni Duggan cross into her own net.
The Gunners drew level again after 55 minutes to take the game into extra time. With only minutes left Dowie raced on to goal following a through ball from Brooke Chaplen and scored the winner.
This win now sees Everton as a major player in the Ladies game. Having won the Challenge cup in 2008, Mo Marley's team can now rub shoulders with Arsenal, who have dominated the game for the last 10 years. Well done girls.
Rachel Brown says: "I don't think I can actually put it into words. I'm amazed that we've been able to get the result, which I think we deserved on the day.
We had plenty of chances and I just think we were very resilient towards the end and held out for the win.
For the first 10 or 15 minutes during the first half, we were well on top. They got back into it with a penalty, but I think we showed our character today. It was a long, drawn-out process into extra-time but our character shone through today with a brilliant goal towards the end.
I don't think you can help but think about it. The last time I played in an FA Cup final was in 1996 and it went to penalties and we lost - so you can imagine I didn't really want to face penalties; I'm glad we got the job done.
With the disappointment earlier this season of not performing in the League Cup final and putting ourselves out of the running for the league title, the FA Cup was our last chance.
We've shown by our pressure and our character that we could come out and do that today."
