HOW DOES YOUR EVERTON HISTORY MEASURE UP?
Mickey Blue Eyes
Evertonians are often loud in their claim for historical knowledge of and commitment to their club. Well, coming up is an opportunity to prove it. It is the Everton versus Everton Chilé match on Wednesday, 4th August, kick off 8.00 pm, ticket details here: http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/2010/07/16/buy-tickets-for-everton-chile
This is a chance to demonstrate your support for the intercontinental link with our Chiléan friends and our common heritage. It really is football history in the making. No other clubs anywhere in the world have this kind of unique linkage or match arrangement. Both clubs have gone to extraordinary lengths to bring this game to the fans and give all of us the opportunity to show our goodwill and friendship toward Chilé after they have suffered the tragic catastrophe of a devastating earthquake. This surely is the true test of loyalty and friendship. Both clubs have been magnificent. Now it is up to us fans to match them and show our support is equal to the opportunity. This game isn't about money. It is about true friendship.
Let me declare an interest. Last year I was one of a party of five who visited Chilé on the occasion of the centenary of Everton Chilé. We were made to feel entirely at home and were greeted with great warmth and friendship by everybody we met, fans, owners, administrators and great ex-players. It was an unforgettable, spontaneous experience and one I would urge you to share when the next visit is arranged. The memory will stay with you for the rest of your life.
If Evertonians owe a large debt to anyone for this event, it is John Shearon, Tony Heslop and others in The Ruleteros Society (see http://www.theruleteros.com/) who promoted the link for years through sheer determination and ability. They have been tireless when it seemed nothing would come of it. Many others would have given up. But their patience, knowledge, determination and good manners paid off. Both clubs and their owners listened eventually. This match is their reward. There's a lesson in there somewhere.
Go, take your kids to this match. When all is said and done it is exactly why we watch the game. Just for once let the best spirit of The Beautiful Game get out. You won't regret it. After all, this is how football began. And then you really will know your history.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER - ONCE AN EVERTONIAN, TWICE AN EVERTONIAN.
