An' if, yer know yer 'istory..............

The next Captain of Everton Football Cub was William 'Billy' Balmer.

'Billy' replaced Tom Booth as Captain.

William Atherton Balmer was born in Liverpool on 12th July 1875.

He first played for Aintree Church and South Shore, Blackpool before breaking into the Everton first team in the 1897/98 season ousting Peter Meecham for the right back position which he went on to make his own.

Billy was described as tough tackling, tenacious and rugged. On one occasion a Merseyside journalist wrote, 'Balmer would do well to control himself, even when under trying conditions and ablutions of temper are not conducive to the best interests of one's side, particularly when occurring in the penalty limit.' W. Balmer captained Everton in the 1904-05 season.

He picked up his one and only England cap in a 1-1 draw against Ireland at Middlesbrough's Ayresome Park.

Billy's brother Robert, also a full back, also played for Everton (188 games between 1903 - 1912) and William Cuff had to choose between them for a place in the 1906 FA Cup Final when Everton took on Newcastle United. Billy got the nod and Everton went on to win their first FA Cup Final 1-0. The Echo reported, 'W. Balmer probably never played a better game than on Saturday. He tackled coolly and kept a good length with his punts. He was a trifle shaky at the close but on the whole his performance was of a sterling character.'

Billy Balmer played 331 games for Everton between 1897 - 1908 scoring one goal, a penalty away at Nottingham Forest in a 4-2 defeat in February 1900. He left Everton in 1909 for Croydon Common before going on to play for Southport.

By 1911 Billy was a newsagent in West Derby. His nephew Jack Balmer went on to play for Everton just before WW2 broke out.
